Exploring St Abbs, Home of New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame
We watched the newest Avengers movie on Saturday and were intrigued to discover that the setting of Thor’s new home, New Asgard, was filmed in Scotland! While watching the movie, we did notice a bottle of Irn Bru (often known as Scotland’s other national drink) sitting in the background, and also that Thor was drinking Innis & Gunn, a Scottish beer, so figured something must’ve been filmed in Scotland.
At first glance, New Asgard looked very Scandinavian. It also looked very island-like, so we thought maybe it was filmed somewhere in the Scottish Highlands or one of the islands. But we were pleasantly surprised to find out that New Asgard is actually St Abbs, a very wee fishing village in the Scottish Borders, and only a 1-hour drive from Edinburgh!
So yesterday, off we went to St Abbs! What a beautiful, quaint little village with lots of character and crashing waves.
St Abbs sits on the southeast coast of Scotland, quite close to the English border, within Berwickshire. It’s known for its fishing and diving, and now, also as New Asgard!
No doubt it’ll soon be swarming with Avengers fans, though with it being such a tiny village, there isn’t much space! It’s not accessible by public transportation, and there are not many parking areas. As well, buses and heavy vehicles are not allowed as the road curves quite a bit.
Back in 2017, the cast and crew of the Avengers came to Scotland to film both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame simultaneously. They were in Edinburgh for a number of months, filming at night mostly at Waverley Train Station and the Royal Mile for Infinity War. And naturally, the part featuring St Abbs was filmed around the same time.
We’ve read news reports that St Abbs welcomed the Marvel cast and crew with open arms and that the lifeboat station there was given a generous donation from Marvel.
It’s lovely when these wee towns get a tourism boost from productions as big as Marvel, but one can only hope that such a small village like St Abbs can handle it and not let tourism get out of control!
