Along with the boat tour my work colleagues and I took with Forth Boat Tours for our “Away Day”, we stayed in South Queensferry and let out our creative side at Honey Pot Creative Cafe.
View of Forth Bridge from Honey Pot Creative Cafe
Nestled almost right under the Forth Bridge, the cafe serves lunch as well as cakes and hot drinks and is a space for you to do some arts and crafts, including ceramic painting and pottery. It is honestly an excellent place to go to on a rainy day, as something different or new to try, for special events, and if you have kids (or even if you don’t!).
Inside Honey Pot Creative Cafe
We went to Honey Pot Creative Cafe to first have a nice lunch of sandwiches, cake, and coffee, and then to do some ceramic painting. There were a wide variety of items to choose from, including travel mugs, candle holders, pet food bowls, and butter dishes. I personally went for the pet food bowl – for Shadow!

Then came figuring out how to decorate our chosen ceramic items! Luckily, we were given inspiration by all of the items already made up inside the cafe. I initially considered some kind of splatter design, but then remembered seeing a plate that had some interesting sponge-like effects on it. It turns out that the effects were made with bubbles!
Essentially, the paint is mixed with Fairy liquid (like Palmolive dish soap for our North American readers) and water, and you blow into the mix with a straw to create the bubbles! Then, you pop the bubbles onto your ceramic item. What a cool way to decorate something!
Everyone’s wonderful ceramic creations
Do keep in mind that if you plan to visit Honey Pot Creative Cafe, you won’t be able to take your items home with you that same day (if you’re playing with ceramics and pottery anyway). After the items have been painted, they have to go into a kiln, where they’re heated up and turned from matte to super shiny! We waited for about 1.5 weeks for our items to be ready to be picked up, and boy, were we all excited to see the results!

What a fantastic wee place to visit to let out your creative side. Remember that you’re not limited to ceramic painting. You can play around with glass or wood, take a turn at the potter’s wheel, and they have adult-only events too. I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for future workshops and events that pique our interest!
